  • Off to sunny state

just got a few minutes left over from thsi hectic weekend. We visited a neighbour on saturday night who had invited us for Navarathri Kolu. We had a chance to get to know a few of the indians around this community. Today, we spent all morning at the Hindu temple helping out the Ahobila Mutt folks with Dolotsavam.

As a sweet surprise, I met a very old friend of mine Srihari. he and I started working together at L-Cube chennai right after college and we were roommate for a year. He hasnt changed a bit, he was a veera vaishanavan then insisting on doing his daily poojas not giving a damn about the fun we make. He used to recite vishnu sahasra namah from 5-7Am, while we, the other roomates were all in our wonder lands dreaming about kate winslet ( we must have been to Titatic the previous night!). And then all of us will be off to L-Cube at 9 AM and start coding in VC++!

This afternoon we had a surprise baby shower for another good friend of ours Archita and Neel. Again we had a wonderful oppurtunity to meet with few other folks around this area. Our social network is building up fast 🙂

Back just a few hours ago, packing stuff up for my early morning flight to tampa for a work related conference and harin to catch a bus to Cornell at Ithaca to spend a couple of days with our cousin Susi, who used to be one of our early dedicated readers!. Until then…

  • Fall peaks, Winter sneaks!

we wish we were out somewhere in new england for a visual retreat of fall colors. But nope, here I am, going nowhere. The winter cold has already beaten up the fall season. New Jersey is not a great place to see some eyecatching foilage but very interestingly though, two trees, on either side right infront of our house, has peaked out so impeccably. This has added a subtle charm to our circle with everyone eyeing our two trees against the backdrop of more blunt green ones. [Our community consists of circles of houses with about 25 houses per circle.]. We should perhaps capture it for I am not sure if it will happen so often.

    fall colors

The days are getting shorter and nights are longer [This is simple reason for the change in colors of leaves…not enough Chlorophyl?). Nights have been bearable so far, but as November starts, we will start refferring to it as ‘Freezing’. For those who havent been thru this, it might look exotic. But believe me, Hot Hot Summer is by far better than Freezing Winter. Ask anyone who has stayed inside the heated car longer than she should on a winter night. Perhaps, New Jersey isnt that bad, but Michigan, where I lived for almost 5 years, gets worst. Practically, outdoor life shuts down for about 5-6 months, something commonly referred to as hibernation. This is when the private gyms lower their prices begging for customers, while movie rentals and beer sales go up!

I used to get carried during my early years in america by winter & snow. Most of what we get in this part of the country will infact be ice, go to Colorado for real and original flaky powdery snow. To enjoy a classic winter, hit the mile high city of Denver where you can visit some of world-renowned winter resorts. Snow on the roads melts down the very next morning leaving no trace of an overnight snow fall [not sure how, but its true).

So as winter sneaks, something I am looking forward to is my snowboarding season! There is not a whole lot of skiiing areas out here, but between PA and NY, there is a handful of good resorts that we could go to. I remember early this year in Jan or feb, how I forced harini to taking lessons on snowboarding. But I try not to remember the next few weeks that she was cursing me with her pain 🙂

  • Laloo is rocking

Atanu Dey whines about a recent decision by our all-star Lallo to reject the idea of importing wheels for trains. He rather proposed ( or did he already approve ? ) a steel plant to manufacture wheels! And the best place for the plant : Naturally, Bihar!

I feel bad that not much could be done with these political moves. While Manmohan and Chidambaram are trying to promote the UPA’s plans for more FDI combined with rural development, Our Laloo comes in and bowls a yorker. All poor UPA wickets gone in a single delivery!. He doesnt stop there, he comes in at the rate of one per week these days. The latest one with a coal/iorn ore freight scam. Perhaps he thought everyone would forget the once famous fodder scam. Come on, Laloo, Ain’t it all part of the same game?

But as i think about it? Is laloo that stupid to have all the train bogies wait for 10 years before the first “Indian” wheels come out of Bihar? Agreed, Laloo is smart not necessarily stupid. Is Mr.Singh so? When Laloo claims that he will immediately speak to the PM to report the coal freight scam, why cant he make a freaking call to Mr.Singh to clarify his “doubts” on India’s self-sufficiency? ok…eventually I have to be settle with Lallo as long as his buddies in Bihar dont churn out square wheels!

Tim Worstall, in his rebuttal posts a terrific question : What do you think will make the people of India richer? An indigenous railroad wheel manufacturing industry? Or a train system with 20,000 extra carriages on it and a further similar number running on new not old wheels?

Aside of the topic – UPA – United Progressive Alliance and CMP, common minimum programme. Only our IAS officers can come up with such astonishingly ambitious but really-means-nothing acronyms every political season for their alilances! Whats in a name? Thousands of people across the world dont read past the title. So these titles, for the uninformed foreigner, perhaps gives a positive outlook. Ah! Let it be, if thats the only good thing out it.

  • Mourning for Reeve

I knew him only as a SuperMan. I will not forget that statue-like figure he had given to the character SuperMan. His face, hair style, shoulders and the physique was close what the supermans creater would have expected from a real human.

    superman

Only a few years ago, I knew his name was Christopher Reeve. And when I knew that, he had already lost 90% of what I, and possibly the whole world, admired in him. His entire body from right below his neck has gotten paralysed and one would least expect that to happen from a slippage on a horse ride. He could not feel or act on a single cell in his entire body down from his face. As pathetic as it may look, the blessing in disguise was he could perfectly see, hear and speak. He could take his food from his lips to his upper neck and thats all, he couldn’t take it further down. His breathing and speech were very much distorted since he couldn’t control the air past his throat.

    Reeve at Forum
[Reeve at Spinal Cord Injury Forum in Australia. Ever since his accident, he had to be bound to a chair with his spinal cord pinned to it coz niether could he hold it himself nor did it have the life to stay straight up ]

In the past few years, I have seen some great video footages of how hard he is trying everyday to beat his fate. He looked such a happy and healthy man inspite of this acute condition. I even saw him speaking at the US Congress pressing needs for stem cell research, which might cure such paralytic conditions. A few months ago, only becoz of his sheer gut and will, he was able to move his index finger, all by himself. An amazing feat according to medical treatments, when all his body cells are technically dead! Infact, I saw him walk comfortably under-water with very little support. Not a moment, I expected he would die without getting up and walking someday. But this today, not him but the Almighty must have given up on him. May his soul rest in peace.

He sure was an inspiration in me everytime I saw him. It reminds us how lucky we are to have had everything we have. We dont have lose anything to realize their values. Lets learn to be happy with and appreciate every small thing around us.

I am sure there are thousands out there who are like him, and Chris Reeve knew it. He did everything possible so every benefit/inspiration he got from medicine and training goes to everyone suffering. He founded the Chris Reeve Foundation and the paralysis resource center. He used his star status to funnel millions of money and influence the goverment to make policies favouring the paralysed. He even wrote a book, Still Me which must be truly an inspiring read for anyone.

What he has gone through is a herculean task. Perhaps, God knew only a SuperMan would stand this test. We can give up everything except : hope. I will remember him for ever.

  • Oktoberfest

No its not OCTOBER FEST,its indeed OKTOBERFEST the spelling is right! This is a little different becoz its german. You might see the word being used all over the world, but the origin and the original OktoberFest is held infact in Munich, Germany. A good friend of ours had visited germany last week and was explaining us about this. Which is when we learnt that its actually a relatively unknown but famous festival in germany. Precisely, this is how the festival has become popular – Word of Mouth! Nobdoy advertises for it and yet surprisingly millions from across the globe flock the small city of munich every year!

I learnt its an ” An autumn festival that emphasizes merrymaking and the consumption of BEER“. So thats the fest. Drinking barrels and barrels of BEER. Indeed a place to be isnt it? Remember european beers are much popular than the tame american ones ( source: Mr.Sudhar 🙂 ) This year’s Oktoberfest started on Sept 18th and came to an end on German National Holiday, 3rd October 2004. In total, 5.9 million people visitied it inspite of the bad weather and the best part is a whopping 5.5 MILLION litres of BEER was consumed ( meaning : went into the bellies and into the drains eventually! :)) ).

The immediate question that came to my mind was why is it called Oktoberfest when its actually held in September? Apparently, It was first held in 1810 in honour of the some Prince marriage to some Princess. Then, the festival began on October 10th and ended on Oct 17th with a flamboyant horse race. Even the following years the festival continued to happen the same way, but eventually festival got so popular and prolonged that they moved it earlier in September to start with. In additioan, the warm days and less chilly nights of september helped people enjoy the gardens outside the tents and “Die Wiesen”, the fields outside ][learning some german here : heheheh].

“The MaB” is the man! Most important of all the BEER in the fest. MaB is a one litre Beer, imagine a liter costs almost 7 euros and thats 40 Million Euros right there! The highlight of the events is Oktoberfest Costume and the Rifleman parade

    Parade

The next Oktoberfest is on 17th of September 2005. Lets seee if we can challenge sudhar’s belly there?

  • Just missed a million

As I was collecting my mails from the mail box at my last residence this past weekend, I noticed a cover, so simple in its look, with the name arunachalam krishnasamy written on top of it. I figured, for our old and naive african american US postal delivery lady, the first 7 letters of the last name matched and she didnt have to match the rest of the name, so she must have dropped it into my mail box. Poor thing, she must have sure noticed the different first name, but perhaps thought i had new family member of something.

And there I noticed there was a spanish stamp for .70 Euro and the sender address on the left side read something like “El Gordo Mega Internation, espanalo” nd some more stuff in spanish. Since our arunachalam’s address was printed (not hand written) i thought this guy must have gotten some serious mail here. Thats when I realized that it didnt have any apartment number. Oops! it read 100 warren street. jersey city, nj, usa. Strange?

I knew the bummers at our apartment building management office under any circumstances, even if the earth is going to be blown up in 10 seconds, wouldnt share the “private” information of its residents. So there is no point in asking them for which apartment our to-be-friend arunachalam lives.

After locking up the mail box, I went through the deck of mails one by one and the everything was some crap except our supposedly genuine looking letter to arunachalam. Hmm? I figured since this is a fellow indian, i could take the liberty of opening up his mail and if its something absolutely important, i somehow could locate and hand this over to him and justify my intrusion of his private mail.

As i read the first few lines of the letter, i couldnt believe what I was reading “Award Notification…Final Notice…E750,000 REF NO: EGS/2551256003/03 BATCH NO: 4/0017/IPD. And it went on to describe how important it is to keep this confidential and so on, and finally insisted to contact them before october 14th.

Harini was standing next to me doing something. I looked at her and said, “Dude, this is some serious shit, we got to find this guy ya?” She had no clue whatsoever.

I said, “This guy has won a lottery in europe. Poor chap must have bought a ticket when he went for a vacation or something, and HE WON!, so we got to find this guy out somehow”. She could see that I was visibly restless. I felt helpless becoz I know this guys lives in the same high rise, How could I ever know which apartment he is on, in that 500+ apartments? I started minting ideas. I said, lets go home immdtly and somehow lets locate this guy. we got to do something. I mean, there is no way I am going to let this million dollars go into the drains. For a second i thought I should legally change my name! Who in whole of spain would know that Arunachalam and Sudharshan are different?

We drove back home. I had to do other things so left this in the back of my mind trying to figure out ideas to locate this to-be-rich guy. After all, the name also sounds he might be from tamilnadu, so atleast he would give me something. Dude, something is better than nothing. Atleast I am honestly trying so hard to locate him ya?

Brilliant was I, checked out first thing on verizon white pages and there he was. Called that 201 number. Damn, it goes to some voice mail. I said, “my name is sudharshan. This message is for Arunachalam Krishnasamy. Please call me back immediately at xxx number. This is important”. I made sure I pronounced my name and his name exactly and in the best possible INDIAN accent. I didnt want to take chances that he could miss my name or number or i could miss his name! Noone called me back that day.

You would think what else I would have done to locate him. Yes, I did run a google search. There were tons of Arunachalams and krishnasamys but NOT that one combination and one from new jersey!. I was only praying that this guy lives on the damn earth still. Dont anyone dare to tell me he is nomore!

On tuesday I said, why not just contact the spanish company and let them know that I am seriously working on locating this person and request them to hold the funds for another week or two. Good idea isnt it?

And so, I ran a search for “El Gordo”. As I scanned through the search results. I read a word that made my brain burst for a second. “El Gordo…Lottery…Scam…”

    “F**K my OZONE !!!”

NOOOOOO! I told myself I am not that stupid. But I was. Couldnt believe it. Immediately tore off the envelope into uncountable pieces and dumped it into the garbage can. Dragged the garbage can out immediately and dumped it into the bigger one on the floor outside.

I didnt want to see or think about that damn thing again. Suckers! Wasted a few hours of my precious life! I didnt even want to save that stupid spanish stamp.

  • Am Back!!

Yes after being away I am back now, Busy with shifting, moving and then without DSL , there were quite a few things happenning.
Finally when everything fell in place Sudhar’s site refused to accept me although he has accepted me his wife long back:)………
well got the id only today so ma just getting started.
    Shall start writing from tomorrow.

    Bye

  • Running out of H1B Visa

Amazing and ridiculous that the 60,000 visas that gets allocated every year got filled out on the very first day of the season.

Visa power: Uncle Sam’s ‘no’ hurts India

Looks like Indians are giving the toughest trouble to the policy makers here in US. I said Indians for one reason that everyone knows that more than 60 to 70% of the applicants in that 60,000 are from India.

In a way, I am a victim as well as beneficiary of this policy. Rollback to six years ago, when my H1b was being processed and when I was expecting that “flying out next week” call to pack my things up, I got a call from the recruiter at the then CBSI (now covansys) that my visa processing has been held up becoz the quota was over. That was somewhere in April of the year. Back then, it took from October to April to fill up those 65,000 ( This year it just took ONE GOD DAMN SINGLE DAY! ). So I was politely told to wait until Ocotber of that year. But my feelings were not as polite. I called up friend Ramesh, who then was working at CBSI Chicago, to ask him if he can do anything for me, as if he was the Secretary of State or something. Feels funny now, but when you are waiting in such a situation, you feel like you can beg to any soul living in US. Eventually, I was benefited for waiting 6 months becoz my application must have been up in the stack when the opened the offices on October 1st. As a bonus, US had increased the quota that year from 65,000 to some 130,000 or something. So that was the season when every tom, dick and this harry ( who? ofcourse me !) came to US.

Today I can exactly imagine how many such folks back in India must have felt when this news came out this morning. Good Luck to those guys who were lucky to have fell in the 60,000 odds and ‘Be Patient’ to those who fell out. There is always a next october…like I had 🙂

  • Sudhar(.com) quoted in The Hindu!

An old friend of mine, Subha, who is a regular contributor to The Hindu, especially their Metro Plus section from Coimbatore, had recently asked me to share my perspectives on Blogging and what it means to me and others who read them. Some pieces of what I shared with her has been reported in the The Hindu.

The Zen Of Blogging – The Hindu

LazyGeek, whose blogs I read regularly, incidentally quoted this on his blogs.

Though I shared my thoughts on blogs with Subha a long while ago, I had no clue if she was going to use them for an article and that too going to be published soon. As always, I was visiting Lazygeek, and there it was. I was reading this blog and shocked to realize someone has written(rather copied?) exactly what I had written…and then i followed this link to The Hindu, from where it stuck me that there was nothing wrong. Thanks to lazygeek, i knew it sooner than later. Anyhow, something to be excited about 🙂

  • New Body for the same Face!

You don’t have to understand what that means. But if realy want to, then…you can see some simple changes in the layout of this website. As much as I enjoyed running this website from my own house from own age old compaq deskpro server, I had to let it go. Blame Verizon DSL. They blocked me from running my own webserver from home. I hate to see such stupid business moves in this 21st century internetized world! I am running this small, my personal website from home. Hell, its not going to take down their bandwidth. Oh, I forget, they want me to pay 25 bucks more for that service.

So this brand new body for the same face sudhar.com is now running from TotalWebHosting(I got all of this for 5 bucks a month!). In that process, I gave up MovableType which was my original publishing system. I moved over to WordPress, a new more simple to use publishing system. You might not notice any major differences, but I did. It took me a whole 10 minutes to completely set it up AND import all my old entries from MovableType. So I am thrilled. It also takes up less space on the server, so long live open source community, I am able to save time and space. Sorry to let you go, MT. I loved you until today.

I am making a lot of setup as I type this. I still have updated the links on the right side. If you see them now, I probably have completed the set up. I need to set up Harini blog and import her entries too. Its going to be a not too long day today before I am done.

My blogging got a surprise recommendation from Hindu? Will update in the next post! Until then, let me do some geek work here!

  • Back On Time

So I am back…exactly after fortnight, as I had anticipated ! Verizon DSL took just so long to install a new service in our new house. Thats the turn around time in the 21st century for a high speed internet connection. Costs you what? Be disconnected for two weeks, because I didnt plan well in advance. I had no clue whatsoever, I thought they could do it in a couple of days, so paid the price. Consequently, my beloved Blog has to go down with me. The poor old PC from where Sudhar.com runs was put to an extended sleep for two weeks. It was a good vacation for that poor box after almost an year. So now its back up. Welcome home!

It took a full day to figure out how to configure the DSL Modem to enable me run this webserver from home. Was skeptical all through, didnt think it will work. But it did. So here I am getting back in form with my Blogs. It was tough to see the site go down for so long, not as much as being unable to write anything. After all, the site was existing for the very purpose. Good to be back.

We have moved to the bustling city of Bridgewater in central new jersey. Apparently, Bridgewater is in Top 15 Best places to live in East coast. Thats so wonderful! I didnt know until now! BUT, we now live about 40 miles from new york city. Its still an evenings drive away, but would never come as close as it was in our Jersey city Port side tower apartment. It was literally a stone throw away to manhattan. What we miss from that aspect, we seem to have recouped by now being just a mile away from the Lord Venkateshwara Temple. So no more excuses from visting the Lord every week. We have already been there thrice since we have moved ! Eventually, a 15 minute drive to work thru the woods is one of the very reasons we live here. 🙂

Glad to have you back & See you all more here from now on!

  • Going offline for a fortnight

This tiny place of mine(us) on the web(sudhar.com) is going to go offline (not available!) for about two weeks as we move from our lively jersey city skyline apartment to a more static bridgewater townhouse. I am also experimenting with DSL at the new place and it will be interesting to see if I am still able to run the site from the bedside! So until this comes back alive please hang in there.

I cannot believe its been a year since we moved into this house. We enjoyed every bit of our downtown life though looking back at it we feel we could have done even better. There is still so many things we never cared to do while we were here. There is a bunch of nice restaurants in the water front area here that we never cared to visit. But we dont miss a chance to say “We should eat there sometime!” everytime we walk across these wonderful eateries. The fast paced downtown life has infact made the past year look even more shorter.

    http://www.sudhar.com/albums/Latest-Snaps/morning_walk.jpg
[You see the building on the left most? two identical buildings, but one on the left bit smaller. We live in the 9th floor of that building.]

We will miss the beautiful evening walks around the liberty state park. On one side you glace at the statue of liberty and on the other side the fantastic downtown new york city skyline stares at you and on the other side the jersey city skyscrapers daunt you. The biggest of them, right infront of us, the 80+ floor Chase building (guess from the picture?) stands so humongously tall at the top of the jersey city water front reminding us of 9/11. The chase building, unfortunately, remains the tallest building south of midtown on either side of the river, after the two towers went down.

    http://jclist.com/modules/xcgal/albums/userpics/10280/normal_Colgate%20Clock.jpg
[See the statue? Hard to recognize…check the closeup below.]

We will miss the always-on-time Colgate clock, standing right next to Chase tower, helping ferry commuters get a sense of the day. According to Colgate, this is the largest clock in the world!

    http://www.sudhar.com/albums/home/statuefromcolgate.jpg
[Closeup of Statue from Colgate Clock]

Right below the Chase tower, facing the downtown skylines is a small memorial for the twin towers. They placed a criss-crossed rusted steel beam (real) remains from the towers. Everytime we walk across it you cannot escape from the spirit of that remains touching you.

As much as we will miss all this, we are looking forward to a wonderful beginning at our new home. Within two miles from the Bridgewater Temple we are going to be in close contact with Lord Venkateshwara. Not to mention the delicious puliodharais and thayir sadhams at the temple cafeteria!

Until my old pc (running this website) comes back to life online, I am going to redirecting and possibly writing out of my account at Bloggar.com. See you all soon.

  • India – Try Try Touch the Sky!

Even though the BJP goverment was stumped for its slogan ‘India Shining’, the reality is India is indeed Shining. This month CNN is running a special report called ‘Eye on India’. It might seem like Singh government has done something spectacular in the last 100 days, but the BJP govmt created the momentum.

    ManMohan Singh
CNN Special Report ‘Eye on India’

The Domestic Airlines Industry is booming like a rocket. Deccan airlines recently announced a Rs.500 ticket from Delhi to Mumbai. Thats less than $15. Even less than what one would have to pay to take a taxi from Mumbai airport to downtown. I hope these competitions are not deceiving. (I wonder how they could slash prices so low and still make money out it) Neverthless, they are giving people real options to think about travel and tourism.

The media industry veiled by the glamour of bollywood is running HOT as well with more and more programming channels popping up Zoom, the latest addition is targeted towards ‘metrosexuals’…the keyword that epitomizes the Indian youth (payed heftly, thanks to US BPO Market!). Zoom also promises to stay away from the MIL-DIL soaps by offering more content on lifestyle, fashion and music. Recent changes in the govt policies for media industry, including the “Industry” status to Film sector, has sparked the growth.

If the UPA govt promise to focus on the poor remains to be achieved, there is hope for everyone and the country to touch the sky!.

  • Coimbatore – The next nexus

Wipro finalising land purchase in Coimbatore

Its a major boon to the local business and economy of coimbatore as Wipro’s Billionaire Chariman Mr.Premji recently announced the acquisition of land in Coimbatore for their software development center. Through other unofficial sources I have also learnt that the land being targeted near the beautiful landscapes at the foothills of Western Ghats Mountains, enroute to the Marudhamalai Temple. Having grown up there, I can vouch its a marvelous place to write code with lots of blessings next door Lorg Muruga!. The interesting thing to note here is Wipro is opening a center to cater the local business around coimbatore and not necessarily the US or Europe markets. With thriving industrial market combined with computerization of everying from banks to supermarkets, Wipro has all the reasons to make this move.

    Ooty
[After first hour, We used to bunk college, go to ooty, ensoy and come back for last hour to give the attendance! Stupid System, only the first and last hour counts for the day!]

Coimbatore or Covai as its lovingly called, has a wealth of resources, both natural and man-made. The best of the natural ones being the renowned cozy weather, water(Though less and less parts of covai is getting siruvani water these days!) and the spectacular Ooty. The best among the man-made being the large pool of talents from around the town. These top-notch institutions churn out 10,000 graduates a year. Wipro is targeting the cream of that, about 100 or so everyyear. I bet the best among the city talents will find a reason to stay home in cbe instead of venturing out to Chennai or Bangalore or farther out. With TCS already in town, and Wipro almost there, I am optimistic more world-class companies will follow their paths to transform the textile city into a Java Town.

Mr.Premji apparently also appeared on Television interview for the very first time. Surprising isnt it? This interview for experss india has some good pointers to everyone of us. Remember, this is one of the wealthiest Individual in the universe talking. So we better listen. I am fascinated by the some of his responses.

He still goes by autorickshaw…at times.

His focus is on Education and he has visited primary schools in remotest villages and even had eaten their mid-day meals with the children.

Which country in the world has this combination of political leadership, in terms of people in power, of different religions, of different communities, of different parts of the country?

    India is the best!

  • Experience the India call centers

Aside all the good things about living close to new york city, there is one unfortunate consequence of friends visting us combining with their tour of new york city! The catch : Those tours have no hotel stay 🙂 (No offense; those who visited us) So that story repeated for the 5th or 6th time this past weekend. So we visited the world trade center site for a 200th time and thats apart from the daily stop over there that I am used to when commuting to work 🙂 Add to that the woes in the messy processes for buying a home, we have been stuck with so many things to do in the past one month, I would have never believed that I will find no time to post a note here. Its not about the time anymore, its about the mental readiness to spend that time on to writing something worth. Another part of your brain tells you that “Just gimme a break”.

We celeberated Krishna Jayanthi yesterday with loads of bakshanams(sweets & snacks) feasted to Lord Krishna. Our toddler krishna idol was given a nice bath and was transformed into his festive attire. To save her some last minute work, Harini had cooked and packed all the the snacks a week earlier. They have been dangerously arousing our appetites since then. To make it even worse, she had boxed them in transparent plastic cases and elegantly arranged them right over the fridge. Just FYI, that is the first and brightest spot that will catch your eye everytime you walk into the kitchen!. But Harini acted as a demon for last 5 days gaurding the snacks from me. Seedai and thatta murukkus were most vulnerable, I could have done dozen things to steal them, but then I didnt. At least, I shouldnt admit that I didnt -:). Finally the demon transformed into a pious and traditional patron yesterday to perform the poojas. Me the evil was eyeing the obvious! We all had a taste of the snacks around noon yesterday and I should say, they were worth all the anxiety and wait. Seedais rocked, undeinably of Lala sweets quality! Murukku Thenguzhals come close second with Rava urundais grabbing the bronze (with olympics season, my ideas run wild! ). She told us Rava urundai was screwed up, but as always, we werent wise enough to notice. After all I savor them once a year, How in a life time I can remember what it tasted or looked like last year?

Funny, it takes me two paras to come to explain the title. Imagine if I hadnt looked at the title just a second ago, I would have slipped two more here before my horse treaded back on course. So recently I changed my really really neanderthal timeline sanyo phone to a new, trendy and cool, Nokia 6225, with a camera (for which I didnt find a real use though I like the built-in FM, grabbing everyone attention with ads & music from pockets! ). In order to change my not-so-great SprintPCS service from my old brick phone to the new hep one, I called up Sprint customer service. After a minute or two, a lady voice sounded as if it was a robot. I really should have recorded it for you to believe how she actually said the words, “Hello Sir”. It was programmed to be that way, the same precise, even if she repeats a million times. Of course, it took no time for me to figure that she was an Indian female (from a call center in blore or delhi). But her english was so strangely funny that a computer would do a better job. Atleast I would have felt better if I didnt knew it was a human. As she started helping me transfer the service to the new phones, I understood she was reading everything from a screen or paper infront of her. But that robot english was so annoying. It was clear and understandable but with absolutely NO emotions attached it. Trying to do one aspect of phone based customer service, she was totally lost on the human aspect of the call. After all, isnt that why we are still having humans answer the phones at call centers? And she said ‘Sir’, about three times for each sentence, it was as if I was a district collector and she was a peon. But its all ok until the wierdest part that came towards the end. After switching the service(technically she was perfect!) and after I said thanks,

    she said, Sir…Sir, H O L D O N Sir, I would like to tell you about some our long distance service..etc?

I said, “no thanks, I am not interested now”.

She said, “N O, S I R. Its part of my job to explain this to your Sir”.

I said, “No, Mam, I have already heard about it and I am not interested now, Thanks for your offer”

She said, “P A R D O N M E, Sir, My call is not complete until I tell you about this Sir”

I screamed “WW HH AA TTTTT?” I said to myself, “Holy Mother, please save me from this ruthless evil of Off Shore Marketing ! ”

She of course is relentless and wasnt stopping, ” Sir, Can you tell me how much you are paying for your current long distance service Sir? ”

I just thought I should help another fellow indian by not hanging up on her, but she was just pissing my paitence off.

I said “I am sorry Mam, I dont want to share that info with you, I really need to hang up now, Thanks for your help”

She goes, “Sir, Long Distance calls are getting expensive and Sir, this is a rare oppurtunity for you to save Sir”. As she said that, I was burning with fury.

I said “Listen Mam, I am paying $9 a month for Verizon local only with no frills attached, Can you beat that?”

    She said, “O H, H O, O H R E A L L Y, Sir, I am sorry I wont be able to do anything for you with that Sir”

I thought, “YOU wont be able to do anything for ME? Holy Mother, DIDNT I TELL YOU THAT BEFORE, Why in the hell didnt you listen?”

Somewhere in the middle of this comic conversation I switched over to speaker phone so harini could listen to the robotic accented english of this Indian female. As I hung up the phone, Harini was literally holding her palm across her mouth laughing herself out. It is unfair to judge all India call centers based on this one funny experience, but my first impression will stay for a while.

  • A colorful story well finished

Between the times we got bogged by the annoying formalities of buying a home, we glimpsed the colorful thriller stories from Athens. And today, the climax of ulitmate event of the human race came to a reverberating end. Way to go Greece. For what was bestowed upon her about a decade ago, Greece did one heck of a job. For this tiny meditteranian country of mere 15 million residents and per-capita income of less than $12,000 peranum, this was the expensive undertaking ever attempted by any country. Add to it the security woes across the globe, It takes more than money and population to pull off the safest olympiad of al times.

It was a moment of great satisfaction, quite apparent on his face, as the mayor of Athens handed over the Olympic Flag to mayor of Beijing, where we will be welcomed for yet another greatest olympics in 2008.

    Handover to Beijing

I was told that Beijing is preparing to take the Olympiads to its next level. Only 4 years later will we find what that means to rest of us. But dont under estimate Beijing and the small yellow people my friends, you got to have seen the 110m Mens Hurdles finals to truly believe what chinese are capable of. Of course, we knew the chinese were breeding gymnasts, table tennis players and divers, but it was revelation to know they were silently breeding sprinters as well when Liu Xiang run the sprint of his life to win the 110m hurdles. I cannot believe chinese beating american and europeon sprinters, God damn, they are still 5 feet tall just enough to jump and clear the hurdle.

    Chinese sprint

Liu Xiang, is elated to see himself beating the line ahead of everyone else. His facial expression says something to the effect, “you suckers, believe this, we can do anything to beat the world!. Pity the favourite frenchmen next to him fell in the last hurdle struggling to comprehend a chinese guy beat him!

I also saw the finishing laps of the mens marathon. A 45Km Marathon in approimately 2hours is the jewel of the Olympics events and is a true test of man’s physical abilities. Here luckily I also saw perhaps the only black-mark moment of the Olympics when De Lima of brazil was, in the middle of the race around 20Km spot, was grabbed over and knocked down for no reason by a cracked protester. Poor lima was a good lead then but unfortunately becoz of this stupid incident was pushed back to only win the bronze. But he was so humble, a true mark of most Olmpians of course, when he said it was not a big deal as he is happy he won a medal. Believe me, it matters when you get a bronze when you could have got a Gold for a fault thats none of yours. But thats how great atheletes behave. He was a great guy finishing with all smiles instead of being sober or angry! Later I learnt the attacker was a defrocked priest who was notorious in attacking major events like this for no reason! he was not a terrorist though.

US, as before finished the medals tally at the top, with China running close behind. Looks like China is all set to break the host country medal count record in Beijing four years from now. My beloved nation, India finished…it is easy to say this way…7th from the last. Though we should be proud of that shooter for that face saving Silver, it is a moment of shame that we have had our worst Olympics that can only be forgotten soon.

And for us, next week is going to be a nightmare as the Republican Convention opens up in new york city, just across the river from where we live. With protesters already burning effigys, we could see the smoke coming over the city. Security is beefed up to an extent that we see armed boats with cops roaming around our water front every few minutes. Coming in and driving around here is going to be a mess. Just imagine those who will be going into the city and to the convention area around the Madison Square Garden, its an unwanted pain. While we are all proud of New york city, why dont we accept that it is a freakin small city for anything of this size. And its not a joke to host a convention of this size and with it a quarter million protesters, to prove that the city is ready for everything!…The biggest mess on the face of the earth will be when new york city wins the Olympics 2012 !

  • awestruck?

If a tiny, athletic, flambouyant and crowd-pulling Jackie Chan can become a local star in nook and corner of India, why not equally powerful and uniquely characteristic, incomparable superstar of Tamil cinema, Rajinikath be a star in Japan. I think whatever comes in goes back!

OSAKA RAJINI FANS Website!!!. I am just totally amazed and awestruck at the amount of activity going on in the website, makes me compare this to the love we have for Jackie Chan. That religious cult following for Jackie when any movie that just has a one scene still of Jackie Chan will run for 50 days. Imainge block busters like police story, Central Theater in Coimbatore will see reckless stampedes. As hard it is to justify chan’s impact in India, equally confusing is Rajini effect in Japan. I guess reiterates the fact that opposite ends attract. More unbelieveable is that the website home page leads to the latest and hot news! Chennai Tour 2004“...Japanes fans of Rajini touring his house, his hotel and marriage hall !. Hard to believe since we are on this side of the spectrum, just imagine how excited we would be take snap infront of Jackie Chans house in Hong Kong, if we happen to be there.

    Rajini Dwarfs
We see such small head blocks of US sports and rock stars all the time infront of the check-out counterrs in every stores here. I am excited to see Rajini is those flavours.

As I read this Tamil blog posted by our fellow Tamizh friends visiting Japan, I see some japanese are so manical about Rajini that they have learnt to speak Tamizh better than English!

    http://www.osaka-rajni.net/image/tour2004/2.gif
This tamil text from their website speaks volumes of their naive interests in Thamizh, even though there are some obvious issues with language constructs. But this is Thamizh as versed by a Japanese, pretty good for that isnt it?

Nah Nah, I bet even if 100 more Jackie Chans come and go, not a single soul in India will pick up Chinese! Dont tell me you followed those dialogues on those kungfu movies. All we cared are those stunt sounds and strange noises that gave new meaning to Mimicry!

  • Enjoying Olympics from an American Eye!

Alas, India won the first medal today with a silver in shooting. 100 Billion faces can now shed a tint of smile. As America stabilized its medal tally to move up to the top spot, NBC media empire trumpets the American version of the Olympics on every media channel available to people living in this part of the continent. NBC, one of the top media conglomerates has bought virtually rights to all forms of Olympics telecast in the US. The unfortunate consequence of this to people like us, non-americans living here, is to just watch the sports as NBC telecasts it. That means we see only american athletes performances. Unless India qualifies for any quarter or semi or becomes unlikely lucky enough for a final, we wouldnt have the pleasure of watching Indians play. With India losing its first game in Hockey, the hopes are only shattering more. I just saw a brief match of flyweight boxing where Kumar lost comfortably(!) to a french guy. On the other end, China leads the Gold tally. There is so much to learn from China, what best do we need than being a largest neighbour? Can we just tear down all barriers and aim for more collabaration from china for next olympics than just free passes to walk over to beijing acorss the Himalayas?.

Neverthless I am happy to see Olympics on HD (high definition) TV via NBC HD. That saves me from Bob Costas who covers most of the NBC Olympics coverage for the regular NBC channel. During the opening ceremony parade, as some of the low-profile countries with one or two (or less than 10) atheletes participating passed by, it was so pathetic how Bob costas specifically mentioned that ‘This is Djibouti, They have never won a medal in Olympics!’, ‘This is Kyrgystan first time in Olympics”…and then a few seconds later completed the sentence by saying ‘They have never won a medal in Olympics!’. Isnt it, rude? He probably thought he was giving statistical info about every country, but it is not an encouraging note at all. Its no big deal that US has won so many medals, with 450 athelete barging in every olympics, it would be shame otherwise! On HD, it was a treat to watch with crystal clear telecast and much less talking commentry and more than anything else, very few commercials!

    Opening Cermony

On a happy note, it was so good to see a standing ovation from the crowd for Iraq on the opening ceremony I was really feeling good that they were able to participate inspite of all the turmoils going back home. Its hard to imagine for us, living in this wonderful peace to understand their feelings about war/death. As a bonus encouragement, Iraq won their qualifying football game even before the opening ceremony, so they were all in Cloud 9 walking up proud. In all, it was truly THE BEST opening ceremony of all olympics. For so much criticisms pouring from across the globe going into the Olympics, they did a fantastic job. It was truly breathtaking.

  • Refreshing with Bach

Life seemed to have run too fast since the last time I was typing something here. Inbetween those days when I thought I should write something, I was inflicted with a sense of mental block. Right at that moment, I feel there is literally NOTHING i could write about. You know that kind of feeling ‘You suck Dude, Go shoot yourself!’ sometimes flashes to me…thats what I mean….So with all the other stuff happening around us, no wonder the left over time from work/eat/sleep is hardly enough to ‘think’ about anything else. I know a lot of people out there love their work because they work everyday in something they are really passionate about. Not everyone is that lucky. Do I belong to that? Hmm…I should admit partially no, but sometimes the search never ends. Reminds me of something I heard from someone..Where ambition ends, Success begins…How true?

We saw Bourne Supremacy last weekend. I am a fan of Matt Damon ever since I saw movies like Good WIll Hunting and Talented Mr.Ripley. I dont know what made Matt/Ben refer to Ramanujam in Good Will Hunting, but I was totally impressed with that thought. The Bourne sequel, Bourne Identity stood out to be different from the type of international spy thrillers. Supremacy didnt let us down and kept us the edges very much. The stunning scene sequences truly keeps you wondering whats next to come, while the car chases were riveting (gave me what I payed for :)). The background score especially the fast percussions pumps your heartbeats a bit up so you are in sync with the gravity of the chases. Good Job. If you are wondering what the story is about, remember the tamil flick ‘Vetri Vizha’, Kamal/Prabhu starrer? Sometime last week we caught up with Bollywood world with ‘Main Hun Na’. If this movie can become a super hit, I think I will direct a movie someday and rest assured that it will become a superhit. The word Pakistan just a bit overused. A scene where a psycotic former Indian army officer(Sunil Shetty) mercilessly shoots an poor pakistani lad is unnecessary. Even though the story clearly intends to befriend pakistan, such scenes even if for just a secon, furiates everyone. The bad but true face of terrorists & millitants were far better as shown in Roja(and even kannathil muthamittal), here it was more kiddishly comical than anything else. I would blame it more on Farah Khan than Sunil. Also, for heaven sake, why dont Shahrukh change his style? He can do better movies than helping Farah Khan. Sushmita was tough sell, i am not sure if shes got the looks anymore?. Anyway, my opinion doest matter, the movie apparently is a super hit. What can I say, Indian audience will remain as unpredictable as always. And the last in our movie week, this friday, Harini didnt miss a chance to pick up ’50 First Dates’ starring Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore. Simple story line, Adam falls in love with Drew with love at first sight. He realizes the next day that she has strange type of amnesia where she forgets everything that night and always wakes up to remember the day before her fatal accident. So he flirts around her everyday trying different things to impress her and date her. Of course, noone would do it but for Drew barrymore and Hawaii! This will make a perfect story for an Indian (tamil) movie! There was only one good thing in the movie…it was the spectacular Hawaii. Niether was anything funny in the movie nor emotional. Sandler has become so famous and rich he will make such movies for his own fun, out of his vacation in hawaii.

Gladly wrapped up ‘Writing down the bones‘ but was desperate to read something refreshing, I picked up Illusions from my shelf for yet another read. Some of you might know Richard Bach from Jonathan Livingston Seagul, if not, dont miss your next chance to read this very short masterpiece by Bach. Illusions is one of his follow-ons to Seagul. Though I believed (more now) in subconscious thoughts and their powers, Bach rejuvenated my thinkings on parallel universes and oppurtunities to realize its values. Bach describes our fears/skills/character/dreams and other such traits of human mind as having connections to parallel universes, where we might be seeing and talking to others(in their parallel universes). Like this as he goes, it is an interesting phenomena and so he has a cult following in the meta physical readers.
